Sensitive Material and East Austin Studio Tour!

Had a meeting with the charming Ilea Avalos of Doe Gallery, East Austin this lunchtime. Doe Gallery are a collection of painters, sculptors and video art enthusiasts based in their studio on 14th and Chestnut.

They're taking part in the famous E.A.S.T (East Austin Studio Tour) in November of this year and have invited us to launch Sensitive Material Austin during that event.

E.A.S.T runs from Nov 12 to Nov 22. We'll be showing scheduled projections of SM works to a seated audience several times a day across both weekends.

So- If you'd like your work to be shown at this event you have until October 29 to submit your moving image.

We're working on an online submission system but for the time being please just email matthew@sensitivematerial.org for a submission form, and more information.

Changes!

Such is the flux of the Art world- a few changes need to be announced. Firstly, we've had to move away from our originally intended venue due to various scheduling conflicts. This is sad indeed, however there is no doubt that once these issues are ironed out we'll certainly took towards Mister Tramps as a venue in the future.

We are in talks with a Studio in East Austin run by some Video Art veterans. We are making progress with negotiating a show for the material we have collected in mid October. Keep your eyes peeled or updates.

Secondly, our roving Curator Adam Boley has asked to take more of a backseat at SM, due to the recent success and positive publicity of his own exhibition schedule. We wish him all the best!

So we're buying lights today. Getting LED rail system. Going to be amazing. We'll have complete colour temperature control, barely any heat, plus no UV! First show scheduled for the end of Sept.

Still thinking about matching colours. I think we're going for a 3 to 4 ft white stripe for hanging/projecting images, on a dark grey background, to preserve the dark feel of the bar. Painting should be finished by next week!

Sensitive Material and Mister Tramps!!

So the venue for the upcoming Austin-based Sensitive Material show is going to be the popular North Austin bar Mister Tramps. We are super-excited to be in partnership with these guys and they have been extremely accommodating to our needs. Mister Tramps has been a North Austin institution for many years, famous for their wide-ranging extra-curricular (sometimes even bizarre!) events schedule and their way-too-good-for-bar-food bar food. We have been granted the use of their 780sqft events room, and adjacent corridor. We are fully renovating the space, with a lick of paint and a complete lighting re-install (more info to come). Mister Tramps is a fantastic venue for Sensitive Material. Located between two of Austin's arterial highways, and miles from the nearest gallery, we aim to become the cultural heart of North Austin, engaging a previously art-starved population desperate for both artistic enrichment, and liquid refreshment. More hyperbole to follow.

Adam Boley - Curator

Everyone please meet Adam Boley. He is going to be my curator for the upcoming Austin Sensitive Material shows. He will primarily be handling the Austin submissions, but will also be in charge of curating the international submissions when they arrive in. He is is a practising photographic Artist from the Austin area, has a BA in photography from St Edwards University in Austin, and helps to run a printing studio just north of Austin. More information on the venue coming soon!

Sensitive Material USA!

So- after a two-year hiatus, Sensitive Material is back- in the United States! Everything is EXTREMELY new and in flux, and I'll add information here that is relevant when I have it. We're progressing well with our programming and we hope to have our first show at the end of September- very close. I should have more information by the end of this week. I'll keep you all posted. So exciting!

NOWA SODA

NOWA SODA is an artist-in-residency program that culminates in a three day art spectacle that transforms the Contemporary Art Center Solvay (CACS) into a building-wide installation art piece. Conceived and curated by Halfslant, an international art group which will work with the resident artists to use the physical space and historical significance of the CACS building as a means to enter into a dialogue with Krakow’s Podgórze community.

The installation will open during the first weekend of November and coincide with performances and film screenings that touch on the theme of transforming a space. NOWA SODA transforms Solvay, a building surrounded by parking lots and hyper malls into a place of unexpected ideas, creativity and possibility.

International artists and filmmakers are welcome to submit art videos and films. This is not a contest, but rather an opportunity to show work in the very specific context of the NOWA SODA event. Selected pieces will be included on the official program, and each contributor will be recognized during the screening, on our website and in all press materials.

Submissons for Autumn 2009

The Sensitive Material Festival of Moving Image and other
Sensitive Material screenings are open to all submissions of work
based on the moving image: film, video, animation,
or anything else.

Entrants are invited to submit as many pieces as they wish.
Submissions should not exceed 10 minutes in length.
Submissions should be on DVD; the DVD must be created without
a menu, and must contain 15 seconds of black before and after the
piece. The DVD must not contain any auxiliary text (eg, titles or credits - this is in keeping with the notion that works submitted are works of 'moving image', not short films).

Terms and Conditions

By making a submission of work to Sensitive Material, the entrant agrees
that:

They hold the primary copyright for the work submitted, and that
the owner(s) of any other material subject to copyright contained
in the work submitted have given their permission for its use (for
more information relating to copyright law please visit www.mcpsprs-
alliance.co.uk

The work submitted may be publicly screened by Sensitive
Material.

Sensitive Material may use the name of the entrant in any event
featuring their work and in any material associated with such an
event.

No monies shall be payable for use of the work submitted, either
to the entrant or to any other person associated with the work.

Then you'll probably love KINOMARLBOROUGH, every Tuesday, at The Marlborough in Camberwell!

Hosted by Mr. Blaney, and in association with Sensitive Material, KINOMARLBOROUGH will be showing a range of full-length films from all over the world, from Hollywood blockbusters to the lowest budget indie films. There's going to be two movies a night, one at 6ish and one at 9ish. FREE ENTRY to both!

Home made pizzas will be HALF-PRICE all night, and a new fangled SMS booze ordering system will be in place, allowing you to order your drinks from the comfort of your seat!

Each month will have a different 'Season' and will be made up of 8 different films, two every Tuesday! Keep your eyes peeled for information on the different seasons coming up.

There is also an opportunity to get your short film or artist's film and video aired! If you would like your work to be shown in the interlude between the two showcased films, send an email to matthew@sensitivematerial.org.uk and we'll try to sort it out for you!

The first Sensitive Material event of 2009 was viewed last night by a packed audience at the Neu gallery in Shoreditch. All in all, 8 pieces of moving image were screened twice during the night allowing late-comers a change to views the work.

We would all like to say a massive thank-you to everyone at the Neu gallery, who were extremely helpful and accomodating, and to everyone attending who made the evening one to remember.

The next Sensitive Material event will be announced soon, so keep watching this space, and making those videos!

Sensitive Material, now in its third year, is a platform for the exhibition of new works of artists’ film and video. Dedicated to expanding and finding new audiences for artist’s film and video, and to exploring the different contexts in which such work can be shown, Sensitive Material has grown to become London’s foremost platform for film and video-based art.

Artists featured in this January’s screening explore such wide-ranging subjects as the mediation and creation of performance by the camera, the development of narrative in video art, women as cardboard objects, filmic historicisation and societal breakdown.
